Adding craters to your table gives it an authentic battlefield look. They represent the effects of preliminary bombardments and provide essential cover to your troops.

First, decide how big you want your crater to be. A useful guide for the interior is a 50-mm round base. If you use one of these, then you'll be able to get large miniatures (such as weapons teams, Sentinels, and Dreadnoughts) inside the crater.
Draw around the base onto your foamcore. Then, draw another outline 5 mm or more around that to create some breathing room. You can then draw the outline of the outer edge of the crater – it's a good idea to make the base oversized since you can always trim it later.
Once you've got the size of the model, cut out the base.
To build up the sides of the crater, you need to cut out several triangles from polystyrene insulation foam. Start by cutting a few triangular strips of foam of different thicknesses. Then, cut individual triangles from the strips – it's a good idea to make extras.
Arrange the triangles on your base to make the sloped sides. Once you're happy with how they look, glue them in place.
Once they are dry, shape the crater a little more with your modeling knife. You might want to trim your base to create a smoother slope. Angle your modeling knife to make a natural slope.
To finish off the crater, apply filler (putty or spackle work well) to the gaps between the triangles to build up a smooth, rounded shape.

Add some small stones and grit, then paint the model with a coat of textured paint (mix in sand with your paint). You can paint the model in a combination of browns and greys. Because of their earth-churned colors, craters look good on any color of baseboard.

A whole set of craters can be built in very little time. To simulate the effect of cluster bombs, you can even make two or three craters that overlap each other on a base.
